Pathfinder

Organisations, markeds and revenue streams are changing - and so are leadership.
Join 40 of Norways top talents in a leadership development program preparing you for the future.
Key takeaways from the pathfinder program

Innovation and technology are crucial for meeting the future. Still, an increasing number of leaders and organisations are realising that implementing a new tech system does not "do the trick". To keep innovating and delivering market relevant products, it is crucial to create an organisational culture that is innovative and forward-leaning.

And culture does not come from tech - it comes from people!
Even more so it comes from leaders. Most organisations are in need of a new set of leaders and internal role models - pushing and pursuing the future markeds, knowledge, methods and revenue streams. You can become one of these.

The future is so complex that we need to work across sectors, industries and companies to understand it, to adapt to it, and to thrive in it.

Future Leaders are proud to launch our first cross sector, cross company program where we invite the new generation of talents and experts to develop as leaders together.

Pathfinder is a platform for both personal leadership development and the ability to work together to understand and lead the future.
Future Leaders 101

With new markets comes the need for new organisational models and leadership models. Future Leaders is a leadership development program where people learn to love chaos, change and complexity. Thinking individually, and acting as one.

Since being established in Oslo in 2015 we've grown to 8 cities on 3 continents. We have supported the development of more than 2000 leaders and hosted more than 100 leadership gatherings.

Future Leaders works both directly with young talents in each city, and is also responsible for the global talent and leadership development programs of companies like DNB and Storebrand.

The program is anchored in critical management reseach, deep learning and complexity theory. We develop leadership capacities and impact potential in three focus areas: self-leadership, relations and collaborations, and complex systems.

Building your own foundation. (2 gatherings)

We direct our attention inwards to become aware of and work with our own behavior, thoughts, feelings and mental models. We work to accept our starting point, and to develop better personal strategies.
SELF LEADERSHIP
LEADERSHIP
You in relations to others (2 gatherings)

We direct our attention towards relational processes to be able to form healthier relationships and more effective collaborations. Sensing the relational field to better understand what is happening between people and how to solve complex problems in collaboration with others.

The program consist of 5 gatherings focused on three main modules: Self leadership, Leadership and Systems. Each of the modules represent where we direct attention in the different parts of the program.
Navigating the world. (1 gathering)

We direct our attention towards the terrain, the systems, context and society that we are a part of. We work to better understand the workings of complex systems and to be better equipped to influence them towards a desired direction.

Program structure
Our method
Our job is to facilitate personal learning processes, not to "give the right answer" on any subject.

How do we facilitate learning spaces?
We create deep learning spaces through vulnerability and trust, building collaborative reflections in peer- to-peer settings.

How do we work with behaviour change?
We practice reflection and deep-learning. The participants develop their own coping-strategies to meet challenges in their professional and personal life.

How do we turn knowledge into action?
We have a highly pragmatic view on leadership. The program is designed to close the gap between knowing and doing, though an emphasis on practical and contextual learning.

The theory behind our program
Some scholars define leadership as a process, focused on achieving goals through others; the influence of other people through different varieties of power combined with the responsibility of delivering on goals. A broad definition lays ground for different theories, approaches, and views. These include personal- , strategic- , administrative- ideological- , situational-, emotional-, authentic, transformational- , relational- , operational management , and many, many more.

In this program, however, we will not touch upon most of these theories. We view, work with and practice leadership at a practical, operational and personal level.

LEADERS ARE HUMANS

Our starting point in the program is you as a human being, a flawed and imperfect human being. In our view, all leaders are also flawed and imperfect. We aim to destabilize the concept of the leader, and rather focus on leadership as a relational process and the act of taking responsibility for some of the problems we face together.

KNOWING DOING GAP

Ann Cunliffe, professor of organisation Studies in Leeds is highly critical of the concept of leadership as something that can be taught, as are we in Future Leaders.

Cunliffe has studied MBA programs worldwide, and how they develop leaders. The results show that far too often programs and studies focus on theory, with little room for participants to adapt what they learn reflexively. Jeffrey Pfeffer, a professor in organisational behaviour at Stanford explains how this has been shown to have a negative effect on leadership development, as people learn the ideal way to lead, but rather seldom, manage to apply it when they graduate, which is shown to increase what Jeffrey calls a knowing-doing gap and apathy. The Future Leaders program is designed to close the knowing-doing gap, though emphasis on practical and contextual learning.

CONTEXTUAL LEARNING

The program is anchored in critical management studies, deep learning and complexity theory. Through personal system-two reflections, participants develop their own evolving strategies for self-leadership, leadership and navigation in complex contexts. Our focus lays on developing personal strategies through testing, challenging, learning and iterating, aligned with where you are in your life, the people you work with and the context in which you operate.

The program is not aimed at handing out simplified objective truths about leadership. We view leadership development as a life-long learning process where you consciously learn through a combination of experience and reflection. The structure, support-system, relations and content are all designed to aid you in developing this process.
